The name of Babylon
In times of numerous invasion of various tribes put an end to the domination of the city of Ur. Around the middle of the 30th century BC, Semitic tribes invade Mesopotamia and established their state with Babylon as it's center.
The name Babylon comes from the Akkadian word "bab-ilim" or "bav-ilim", which means "God's gates".
The founder of the city is considered to be the Akadian ruler Sargon the Great, who founded the first empire in the world- the Akkadian Empire.
There are two periods of Babylonian control in Mesopotamia.
The first period is between 1900 BC - 1700 BC and the second period is after 625 BC till 539 BC, when Babylon was finally conquered by the Persian king Cyrus II. The existence of Babylon as an independent state in our history led innovation in the field of medicine, maths, astronomy and many other groups.
One of the great achievements of the babylonian is creation of number system based on the number 60. They also divided the hour into 60 minutes, the circle into 360 degrees and introduced the 7-day week. Babylon is famous for it's magnificent walls and architectural achievements. The city population was over 200 000 people making it one of the most populated cities in the entire ancient world.
Precisely because of it's huge population, Babylon stretched over a huge territory, which was surrounded by five rows of fortress walls, 300 towers and many gates to reach the city.
Even in 331 BC when Alexander the Great conquered Babylon he was greatly impressed by the architectural success of the city. We also learn about the rise of Babylon from greek descriptions, as all we know in Babylon there were the impressive hanging gardens which were described by Herodotus and Kalimah in the list of Wonders of the World.
"Rise and fall" is the Babylonian story which remains a deep legacy in our history."
